City Seeks Artists for DPS Building

Staff Report

The Journal

Southlake is looking for a few good artists to add some local culture to the new $28 million Central Department of Public Safety building.

The city is seeking artists to create fire- and police- themed artwork for the facility being built on Carroll Avenue. The building is expected to open in November 2009.

The project is open to all artists 18 and older. Applications and ideas must be turned in to the City Secretary’s Office, 1400 Main St., Suite 270, by May 30. Applications should include a resume, a letter of interest, examples of work and descriptions.

The city, which has budgeted about $200,000 for the project, will pay the artists for their work, said Kerry McGeath, deputy director of community services and liaison for the Southlake Arts Council.

Ideas for statues include a 9-foot piece in the main entrance, a historical fire station bell and yard sculptures for the interior courtyard. The city is also seeking wall paintings: one for the main lobby and another for the fire station.

Artists can submit more than one proposal.

An artists’ selection committee will be appointed to judge the applicants based on their merit and experience.
