Lakeside Congregation Celebrates New Church Building in Southlake

Local Church to Host Open House

Contributing Writer

The new steeple in Southlake belongs to Lakeside Presbyterian Church (P.C.A). After much prayer and work, Lakeside completed a 7,000-square-foot church building at 2701 West Southlake Blvd, neighboring the new Watermere development for senior living.

"We ... designed the building to look like a traditional church," said the Rev. David Boxerman, pastor of Lakeside since 1997. "We want people to know where they can come to find faith, hope and love."

A new building doesn’t equate to a new congregation.

Founded in Southlake in 1992, Lakeside has about 120 members and is part of the Presbyterian Church in America, which believes that the Bible is "without error in the original manuscripts." Other Presbyterian church groups in the U.S. include the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church (USA), the largest in the denomination.

Purchasing more than 7 acres of land in a prime location on Southlake Boulevard was a major effort and so was paying more than $1 million for construction of the church, the pastor said.

"Nearly everyone in the congregation made great sacrifices to get us where we are," Boxerman noted.

The church had been meeting in rented facilities, ranging from its inception at Johnson Middle School to Carroll Baptist Church. Various other denominational churches in the city also allowed Lakeside to use their facilities while working to complete its own, Boxerman said.

Lakeside views the new building as a stepping-off point to serve the community, Boxerman said. Already several music recitals have been held there, in addition to a home-school organization’s spelling bee and science fair.

"We are not all about us," Boxerman said. "We want this building to be useful to our friends and neighbors."

Boxerman said they are a family-friendly church committed to showing the love of Christ to those in need.

"Churches are important in communities as beacons of light, loving our neighbors and urging others to do the same. We hope to be such a beacon," he said.

The congregation at Lakeside will host an open house for the community 11 a.m.to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17. The open house will feature bounce houses, snow cones and free food. Models of the church building created by the congregation’s children will be on display. The dedication service is planned for 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, see www.LakesidePCA.org.
