Larre’s Corner

About a month ago, I told you about a very special book drive being spearheaded by Alexa Herzog, a junior senator in student council at Carroll Senior High School.

The book drive took place during May, and benefited United Through Reading, an organization that provides an opportunity for our military, separated from their families, to record themselves reading bedtime stories and wonderful books on videotape.

The group then sends them at no charge to the families so that children who have a parent serving in our armed services might not feel so "separated" while that parent is away.

Well the results are in and about 300 books were received, with the largest donation coming in from Johnson Elementary which donated a whopping 69 books!

As the winner of this drive, Johnson Elementary library received a $200 check from the Carroll Senior High Student Council.

Miss Herzog, you and your team have done an exceptional job! And more important, you have helped make many little hearts who are saddened by the missing presence of their Mom, Dad or both serving in our military, feel just a bit better about going to sleep.

Just this past week one of our own, Kimi Morris Martin, was elected vice president of public relations at the Grand Council of Kappa Alpha Theta at the grand convention in Miami.

This Grapevine High School Mom gladly accepted the position at the installation banquet Saturday night.

What makes this so amazing is that any community might enjoy having a national sorority board member in their mists but we have two!

Jean Mermoud Mrasek was elected national president of Chi Omega Fraternity in 2004. Adding to this bit of fun is the fact that not too long ago, the Chi O’s and the Thetas were the two local sorority alumnae chapters which had a joint meeting this year.

The Chi O’s hosted, while the Thetas provided the speaker, Colleyville history guru Cindy Harriman, who spoke on historical clothing works.

Ms. Harriman is a highly respected historian and works at the civil war museum in Fort Worth.
